African Dresses

It was a fun new experience to go shopping in Kariakoo. We went with our friendly guide, John. Kariakoo is the main african shopping place in Dar. Mzungus (white faces) are few and far between. We hadn't even considered going until John offered to take us. He said we needed the experience! It was an experience!! I wanted to take pictures, but didn't feel like I should, so I just have memories. We bought material, and then John took us to a tailor.

There we selected a dress from a picture on a poster. Then we were measured and were told the dresses would be ready to pick up in two days. I am now an American African with an African dress. In fact, I have two! It cost 10,000 shillings to have each dress made and 10,000 for the material for two dressses. So, altogether, two dresses cost 30,000 shillings or about $27.00. I wore my dress to church on Sunday and received many compliments.

It is a great skirt and top combo with zippers and completely lined. What a bargain!!!!!

Very cute dress mom!! I didn't know it was a 2 piece! Next time you should do a solid fabric for the bottom, and another pattern for the top. What color is your other one?

Jan, why are you posting as mom? It looks kinda funny for mom to be saying how cute her dress is....Jan, you need to go to Africa to understand that both pieces need to be the same pattern. All of the Africa dresses have the same pattern for the top and bottom.....can you get solid colors in Africa??? :)

If you look closely, the fans on the top and the bottom go in different directions. They are also going different directions on the front and the back of the skirt. First rule in home economics is to lay the patterns all going in the same direction. Guess they didn't take the class, but I don't really care. That is how you can tell that it is a skirt and a top, Jan!

Sorry I posted as mom. I had just put her pictures on, and I decided to hurry and comment too.

I was surprised to hear that the dress is a 2-piecer. Very cute, despite the fabric going different ways.

And Jan, I completely understand why you made comments as Mom and Dad. I made comments as BJ a couple days ago because I had typed up a comment and then found that I was logged in as BJ and I didn't want to log in as me. :)
